What LL sells

Asks about making money here.

He claims LL sells access. They don't.

They sell ... a drug. Like all drug creators, they cut their product. Like all drug pushers they overstate how good the high is. Like all good pushers, they let other people whore themselves to afford the product. Like all good pushers, they know you are addicted, and they don't have to be nice to you.

Like all good drug dealers, they let people scrape out small profits from cutting the drugs yet further.

Remember... the only difference between content and crack is... I'd never whore myself for crack...

  1. Ahhh, yes!

I've been trying to think of another industry where contempt for your customers is so deeply ingrained.

    You got it.

And, thank you. This post did more good than a hundred silences.

  2. I wish I were better at big picture thinking. I know that there is something out there... hmmm... about in SL how the gift and profit economies are in conflict in ways that produce ripples of tension.

Maybe I can form some words on this... tomorrow.

It will start with someone lame...

  4. I'm sure some nice conspiracies can be thought of as well. Something involving world domination, enslavement of the population, probably aliens as well.

But usually the simplest solution is the correct one. Well, I'm looking forward to my next push...

  5. As someone who works as an IT consultant I just don't see this at all. Rather LL has all the hallmarks of a company with a software product they are only just in control of and a corporate culture deeply messed up through unmanaged expansion. And that's being kind. And optomistic.

Never make the mistake of assigning malice where there is simply incompetence.

At least someone does seem to have taken Philip aside recently and suggested that modelling a business on Burning Man is not a terribly wise decision.
